Tour Stop: Oxford Whispers by Marion Croslydon

Welcome to my stop at the Oxford Whispers Book Tour brought to you by Goddess Fish Promotions. The author, Marion Croslydon, is here to share the inspiration behind her book. There is also a giveaway which I will discuss at the end of this post.

Before I turn you over to Marion, here's a little something about Oxford Whispers.

Title: Oxford Whispers
Series: The Oxford Trilogy #1
Author: Marion Croslydon
Expected publication: December 12th 2012
Publisher: Carlux Publishing
Two star-crossed lovers in the English Civil War
A painting with haunting powers
A murderous ghost back for revenge

Madison LeBon is dead set against the dead. She has vowed to ignore her Voodoo-stamped heritage and the psychic gift passed down through her Louisiana family. The world of the living is where she wants to belong.

But her resolution shatters when the ill-fated lovers in a painting—the subject of her first history class at Oxford—begin to haunt her. The lovers warn her against their own nemesis, a Puritan from the English Civil War.

In misty present-day Oxford, Madison embarks on a quest to unravel the secrets of the past and understand her personal bond with the painting. To protect herself, she must learn to accept her gift before life imitates art, in all its tragedy.

College becomes more complicated when she falls hard for Rupert Vance, a troubled aristocrat and descendant of one of the characters in the painting. With the spirit of a murderer in hot pursuit, Madison comes to realize that her own first love may be doomed…

Based on a real Pre-Raphaelite painting, Oxford Whispers is full of romance, drama and suspense.

Fall in love for the first time… Again

And now, here's Marion Croslydon..

Thank you so much for having me and my debut novel, Oxford Whispers, on Night Owl Reads… It’s an awesome blog and you’re doing a great job which I enjoy very much post after post.

Oxford Whispers is a New Adult Paranormal Romance (Upper-Young-Adult / Mature YA / College-Lit). It tells the story of Madison LeBon, an American student at Oxford University, with psychic powers she prefers to ignore. But when the tragic lovers in a painting begin to haunt her, she must learn to accept her gift. Otherwise, life will imitate art and Madison's own first love will be doomed.

Inspiration behind Oxford Whispers

VOODOO - There’s a strong Voodoo component in the novel and in Madison—who is kind of an “Ivy-League Sookie Stackhouse”—because I was born in West Africa where Voodoo originates, and spent a lot of time in New Orleans and Louisiana. I’m a big fan of True Blood –hence the Sookie reference—and loved the storyline involving Lafayette and the ghost of that beautiful lady named Mavis who can’t move to the next world because she’s looking for the soul of her murdered baby (that’s in Season 4).

A REAL-LIFE PAINTING - I have also drawn inspiration from facts and a real-life painting. I fancied myself as a YA Dan Brown (emphasis of “fancy”). The center of the plot is a Pre-Raphaelite painting titled The Wounded Cavalier by William Shakespeare Burton. I spent HOURS looking at it on the wall of my bedroom as a teenager. I kept asking myself: what if those characters existed? What’s their story? Did they love each other? More importantly, did they live happy forever after?

Oxford Whispers has two story threads tightly intertwined, one in the present, the other in the past, seventeenth-century England. That story is what I imagined for the people in The Wounded Cavalier.

OXFORD - As part of my business degree, I was selected to spend a year at the prestigious Oxford University. For me, it was a dream come true. During my time there, I explored every corner of the city. Some of its most famous landmarks have now a personal resonance: The Randolph, the Turf Tavern, the Queen’s Lane Coffee House… I even celebrated my birthday at Freud’s, just like my heroine Madison did.

Inspiration for my writing

I’m an avid reader of Young Adult and paranormal. Like millions and millions, something kicked inside of me when I read Twilight and watched the first movie (by the wonderful Catherine Hardwick, and for the record, none of the male directors in the rest of the saga have come even close to what she managed to capture). Love me or hate me for it but that’s how I really discovered the genre and started reading fictions, or rather devouring it.

In the YA paranormal genre, I also love the world built by Richelle Mead in the Vampire Academy. It’s inspired from real Eastern European folklore, and if you haven’t yet discovered her world of Morois, Strigois and Alchimists, please give it a chance. I’m a big fan of Adrian, that’s why I enjoy the spin-off series Bloodlines, in which he plays an even more central role.

Recently, I’ve also become addicted to Jennifer L. Armentrout and her Lux novels. For those of us who remember Roswell (the TV series) and liked it, I would recommend to get into her stories of aliens in high school and conspiracy theory.

Then comes my second BIG love… Simone Elkeles. She’s the author of Perfect Chemistry. She really is the “mother” of what we call “realistic YA.” Her books totally capture the breathlessness of the first kiss. It’s heart-breaking, exciting, sexy as hell, and I could go on like that…

And, now, if I’m given this wonderful opportunity to share the big influencers in my writing journey, I’d like to mention Tammara Webber (and her amazingly beautiful sensitive Easy), Abbi Glines (who can create swoon-worthy heroes like nobody else) and Jamie McGuire (and her controversial but excellent Beautiful Disaster). These authors are writing New Adult, and they are a constant inspiration for me as a reader and a writer for the stories they create and the way they have managed to connect with readers in a honest and sharing way.

I hope I managed to share some of my enthusiasm for Oxford Whispers and Madison, as well as the people who inspire me to write.

Thank you Marion for sharing your inspiration and inspiring us at the same time. It's a pleasure to have you here!

About The Author

I am a true citizen of the world. I was born in West Africa, grew up in the South of France, and studied in Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Cape Town, and Oxford before finally settling down in London. This wide variety of cities has provided lots of inspiration for my writing. Talk about culture exposure!

In addition to being an author, I work as an entrepreneur, wife and mother-of-one but spend a good deal of time with books, DVDs and listening to my mp3 player; all for the sake of inspiration, of course. My debut series, The Oxford Trilogy, has been a blast to write because I can indulge in my favorite types of music: Country and English rock.

My main goal as a writer is to make readers dream bigger and cause their hearts to beat a little faster. Since my writing is all about sharing dreams and stories, I love connecting with fellow readers and authors.

I mentioned a giveaway earlier, Marion is giving away a $20 New Adult Reading pack --i.e. selected NA titles on Amazon to one commenter on the tour. So be sure to follow the tour, which you can find here, for more chances of winning. Good luck!
