Title: Masquerade
Author: Nicole Flockton
Published: October 22nd 2012
Publichser: Crimson Romance
After being humiliated by her fiancée, Sophie Franklyn has decided that getting involved with work colleagues and men in general isn’t for her. Now her focus is going to be on her career and her recent promotion. That is until at a New Year’s eve masquerade ball, she meets a man that tempts her to question her choices.

Alex Scavoni is extremely dedicated to his job, so dedicated that his first marriage crumbled under the pressure of his dedication. Now he’s happily single, with a new job he is excited to start. When he meets a masked Sophie at the ball, she fires desires in him he thought long dead. He spends a wonderful night with her, but wakes up alone.

The next time the two meet, it’s in the high pressure world of Emergency Room medicine where they must work side by side. While they deal with the stresses of the Emergency ward, they endeavour to keep their feelings for each other on a professional nature. When the desire that pushed them together that one night flares to life again, can they ignore them or will their one night together have consequences neither of them planned on?

My Journey to Publication
by Nicole Flockton

I’m an author. My debut release is out there for all to see. Wow, it feels really weird to be able to write that.

When I first started writing it was a bit of fun. I was involved with some girls on a community forum and we took the basics of an online read and created our own little story. I have that story on my computer and I look at my first efforts – I thought I was pretty good, boy I cringe when I read it now. But I also love it because it shows me just how far I’ve come.

That was back in 2002 when that story started and that was when I started my first manuscript. That manuscript has changed so much as I grew and began to learn my craft. The idea about getting it published was always there, but it was also a million miles away in my mind. It was a one day, maybe, kind of thought.

Writing was something that I enjoyed doing, it was fun to create something and watch it evolve. But it also was a hard slog sometimes. There were months when I didn’t write. Eventually I thought if I want to do this I have to give it a bit more time than I was.

I’d joined the Romance Writers of Australia back in 2003, I didn’t get hooked up with a critique group until 2006 and from then I became a bit more committed. I had to put my work out there, I had to learn to take criticism. I had to become accountable for my work.

It took me another two years before I submitted my first manuscript and that was after I won an online pitch. I had to send the partial, eventually I got a request for a full and then a subsequent rejection on it.

In between sending that MS in, I pitched my second manuscript at a conference. That also went through the process of partial request, full request, rejection. In between all of this I moved from Perth Australia to Houston Texas in 2009. For 12 months my mind wasn’t on writing. But I got back into it.

Finally in June this year I realised that if I truly wanted to achieve my goal of publication, and I was a lot hungrier for it now than I was a couple of years ago, I had to jump off that cliff. And so on Tuesday 12th June 2012 I sat down and wrote out a query email for Crimson Romance. The next day I received an email requesting the full manuscript. The following Monday – June 18 th at 3.55pm in the afternoon I sent that manuscript off. A day and half later on Wednesday 20th June 2012 I received the email that said they wanted my book. My dream had become a reality, but the dream isn’t over. This first sale is just the start.

Masquerade was the second manuscript I’d written. I’ve numerous manuscripts that I’ve started but now that I’ve sold I’m being bombarded with ideas, it’s like my subconscious has been unlocked. It’s an exciting journey and I know it’s going to be a journey that is full of highs and full of lows. But now I’ve started I can’t stop. I have to keep going. And I will.
